Ylvis

A video that captured 13 million people's attention in less than a week. This might potentially be the 3rd viral video this year following Harlem Shake and Gwiyomi.

A common thing about all these viral videos, not forgetting Gangnam Style, comes down to one sentence. "I didn't know it would be this big." Yes, these videos weren't made on purpose to get them viral. Ryan Higa never would've thought millions of people will be watching his videos. It's probably something like reaching for the stars for them to dream about something like this.

This also proves a fact about viral videos. They do not have to make sense, they can be whimsical like Harlem Shake, doing weird stuff around for a minute or so; or having foxes sounding like gring ding ding ding or hatee hatee hatee ho! The whole point comes down to the point-it's weird and that's why it's cool and fun.

For my generation, in my opinion, it is Lady Gaga who has open doors and pushed boundaries of creativity, proving creativity should not be bounded by stereotypes. From my observation, after Pokerface went on to be a mega hit and made Lady Gaga an icon, artists are pushing boundaries in terms of fashion and telling the world, "it's ok to be like this, this is just me being creative."

That is in terms of fashion, now people like Ylvis are pushing the boundaries for music. They used professional music producers and produce serious dance numbers, like the ones we hear on radio, but with wacky lyrics. Not only The Fox, if you check out their other videos like StonehengeWork It and Someone Like Me, all of them are in this form. Serious music but realistic, funny lyrics that created our laughter, and of course their recipe to success. The best part of it is that people are accepting their quirkiness and find it creative and brilliant! Besides, I find the songs are actually better than songs about being drunk and having sex. To a certain point, it probably made The Lonely Island a little less funny. Thank god they were not Americans!

Such simple combination of elements, without any complicated, sophisticated tunes and beats; these brothers easily beats all genre of music. The genre is clear, the message is clear, the tune is familiar to our ears, the lyrics are especially hilarious yet simple. I say, Ylvis has achieved the divinity of creativity.
